About the Sustaining Leaders Academy

A Unique Professional Development Opportunity

The Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA) and the University of Pittsburgh School Library Certification Program are implementing the first Sustaining Leaders Academy for PA School Librarians (SLA), funded by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from Commonwealth Libraries (PA Department of Education).  This 2016-2017 collaborative will offer 23 Pennsylvania school librarians who have between 6 and 15 years experience as a school librarian the opportunity to revitalize their leadership competencies.

The SLA is an innovative, immersive professional development experience designed to sustain the current generation of school library leaders in PA schools and in PSLA to assure a systematic succession plan so that Pennsylvania students will have strong and effective school library programs led by school librarians who are leaders in their schools and professional associations at the local, regional and state levels in the coming decades.

The Immersion Experience of four days was held in July, 2016, where the Sustaining Leaders particpated in leadership activities and worked with their assigned mentors who are experienced school librarians.

The Personalized Learning Experience

During the Immersion Experience, the Sustaining Leaders worked with their team, team leaders, mentors, and Peer Coaching Partner to develop a Personalized Learning Experience (PLE) plan with a time line for implementation and identified needed resources.  Over the SLA year, the plan will continue to be developed through monthly video conference sessions. The plan should identify specific aspects of a library program or professional development that each Sustaining Leader  will focus on during 2016-17.

The following revised template was created July 15, 2016.
