Background on the Regional Leaders Academy

The Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA) and the University of Pittsburgh School Library Certification Program are implementing the first Regional Leaders Academy for PA School Librarians (RLA), funded by a fourth Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from Commonwealth Libraries, PA Department of Education.  This 2017-2018 collaborative provides 28 PA school librarians the opportunity to expand their leadership, communication, interpersonal, and presentation competencies and create a communications network for PA school librarians.  The RLA model builds on the successful prototypes of the 2014 and 2015 Emerging Leaders Academies, in which 44 librarians new to profession participated, and the 2016-2017 Sustaining Leaders Academy, in which 23 experienced librarians participated.

One outcome of the academy will be to create a state communications network that extends to the school district level so that every school librarian in the state can be provided with valuable information about professional development opportunites and ways to support legislative initiatives to improve school library services for the state's K-12 students.

    Connect/Communicate/Create Community

    Our Mission

    MISSION:

To “connect, communicate, and create community” among Pennsylvania school librarians by providing:

    • Accurate and timely information
    • Peer support
    • Professional development that will empower school librarians to help all students learn

    WHAT WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH:
    • Establish the Network structure and implement the PA School Library Communicators Network that will connect all PA school librarians through a linked, regional structure
    • Share timely information with all PA school librarians about:
    • Implement the new AASL National School Library Standards
    • Support the passage of PA House Bill 740  “One Certified School Librarian Per Public School”
